PAPERCRAFT ESSENTIALS ISSUE 58 SNEAK PEEK!

Inside issue 58 of Papercraft Essentials – on-sale 5th August – you will be treated to a vellum masterclass where you can learn to make this beautiful creation.

Materials…

Pink and green vellum

Green florist wire (for stems)

Cotton buds

Glue with small nozzle applicator

Metal tea spoon with rounded handle

Large & very small ball embossing tools and embossing mat

1.5cm heart and star punches

Pink inkpad

To create…

1Take a cotton bud and cut the bud part away from the stem. You will notice the stem is hollow and there is a small hole in the end of the bud – put the tip of a small glue nozzle into the hole and fill with glue. Push wire into the hole and turn the bud until it feels secure, then wipe off any excess glue.

2 Dab the bud with a pink inkpad, then put aside to dry. Once the bud is firmly stuck in place, you can then begin to build up the rose.

3 Punch 14 hearts from pink vellum – you may need more or less depending on the size of the rose you want. Lay the hearts on an embossing mat and, starting from the pointed end, use short, sharp strokes on the rounded end of the heart with a spoon handle, taking care not to press too hard or you will damage the vellum.

4 Move quickly up the heart and across from side to side until the rounded ends of the heart start to curl. Roll your first petal to make a cone shape and glue it to keep the shape. Add some glue to the end of the bud, then slide the cone up the wire so the bud fixes in at the bottom of the cone.

5 Take the second petal and coil it around the cone, being careful not to coil it too tightly. Take the third petal and, once again, fold it around the second petal – avoid putting the ‘v’ shape of the heart in alignment with each other. Overlap the petals as you work around the rose, building up the layers. As you get nearer to the outside of the rose, the petals will need to curve less (sometimes a small cut in the pointed end will allow the petal to be glued in place a little more easily). Fix the outside petals on slightly higher up on the underneath side of the rose so they show. If you stick them on too low down you will end up with a ball shape rather than a flatter rose shape.

6 Once you have built up the rose, punch a star from green vellum. Make small cuts up between the points then, using the large ball embossing tool, rub in circular motions in the middle of the star so the points ‘cup’ upwards. Pierce a hole in the centre with the wire and glue in place on the back of the rose.

7 Cut out a basic leaf shape. As you cut, wiggle it a bit so the edges of the leaf look a little serrated. Make sure to leave a bit of a stem on the leaf so you can glue it in place under the rose onto the green sepal you have just made with the star shape.

8 Before gluing in place, add some character lines to the rose (such as veins and shading) so that it looks more realistic. Gently curve the leaf with your finger, then fix in place to finish.

Materials…

Deep pink and pale pink A4 cardstock

Thick white vellum or parchment craft paper

Joycraft stencil (6001/0029)

Small & extra small ball embossing tools

Green/white spot satin ribbon

Green 4mm flat-backed crystals

Pale green 3mm pearls

Vellum-safe glue or double-sided tape

Low-tack tape

To create…

1 Lay the embossing stencil onto a piece of white vellum or parchment craft paper and hold it in place with low-tack tape. Turn the stencil and paper over so the stencil lays underneath the paper.

2 Place the stencil and paper onto an embossing mat, then rub over the paper lightly with a little wax and emboss your design. Remove the stencil.

3 Follow the steps below to assemble the bookmark, with the embossed panel behind it. Finish by adding flat-backed pearls and crystals to the centres of the flowers as shown.

How to make a vellum bookmark…

1 Cut a piece of deep pink cardstock to 16.6cm long and 18cm wide. Measure and mark at 6cm and 12cm to make 3×6cm sections.

2 Trim a 4.4cm wide and 14.6cm long aperture in the middle section. Trim the vellum to fit, allowing enough space around the design to fix the vellum onto the framework of the aperture. Fix pale pink cardstock behind the embossed panel.

3 Fold over one of the side sections and fix in place. Cut a piece of green spotted ribbon long enough to make a loop at the top, and for two tails to show at the bottom. Fix in place, then fold over the other section and fix in place as before.

Materials…

White parchment craft paper

Fan stencil medium designer grid (SPB010M1)

Green 8mm crystal brad

Pink 5mm flat-backed crystal

Green 3mm flat-backed crystal

Pink tassel

Glue

Medium, small & extra small embossing tools and embossing mat

Pricking tool

To create…

1 Lay the stencil onto the parchment paper and hold it in place with low-tack tape. Turn the stencil over so the paper is on top of the stencil, and rub over gently with a little wax, then emboss all of the design, using the larger tools for the large shapes and the smaller tools for the smaller details.

2 Once you have finished embossing, turn the stencil over so it is now on top of the paper, and prick through all the holes around the fan segments. Remove the stencil from the paper and very carefully tear the segments away. Make up the other eight segments in the same way.

3 Punch a hole big enough for a brad in the end of each fan segment using a small circle punch, making sure all the holes line up with each other. Lay the segments on your work surface and arrange them into a fan shape. Overlap the bottom end parts, then push the brad through the holes to hold the end of the fan together.

4 Lay the fan so that one side of each segment is very slightly overlapping on top of the next segment. Add a tiny amount of glue to the very edge of each segment, so they will stick and hold in place.

5 Finish by adding 3mm green crystals and 5mm pink crystals as shown.

To create…

1 Print the leaf and dotty patterned papers back to back on a piece of A4 cardstock. Use the template to draw and cut the box from the card, then score and lightly fold the box, securing with double-sided tape on the corner flaps.

2 Print orange and green papers for the box label then resize and print the journaling frame and assemble as shown. Apply rub-ons to spell your message and fix to your box, together with three pearls just above on the lid.

3 Print the leaf and dotty papers back to back on lightweight cardstock, then layer the vine leaves on an orange paper background before printing.

4 Die-cut both using the smallest tag on the Sizzix die, ensuring the leaves on the orange piece are near the bottom. Trim and attach the orange layer to the double-sided tag. Ink the edges.

5 Apply your rub-on greeting to the tag and embellish with pearls. Punch a small hole in one of the tabs on the box to fix your tag with a length of ribbon secured with a bow.

6 Stamp an apple onto an offcut of printed orange card using the VersaMark pad, and sprinkle with green embossing powder. Heat set the image, then cut around the outline before attaching to your box using foam pads and applying glaze to the two outer halves.
